Big Dogs Welcome
Large Dog Grooming
Big dogs get the same one-on-one groom as everyone else, without the part their owners dread: the lifting, the loading, and the drive.

Big Dogs, Groomed at Your Door
Getting a large dog to a grooming appointment is a job before it is an appointment. Lifting eighty pounds into a car, managing them through a lobby, and doing it again at pickup is the part owners quietly dread, and it is the reason big dogs often go longer between grooms than they should.
Large dog grooming at home removes the travel entirely. The van parks outside, your dog walks a few steps in, and the whole service happens there: bath, blow dry, brush out, haircut where the coat needs one, nails and ears.
Why Size Changes the Work
A large dog is not a small dog scaled up. There is simply more of everything: more coat to wash through to the skin, more water to drive out with the blow dryer, more surface to brush, and more time needed to do any of it properly.
Drying is where big coats are most often shortchanged. A thick coat that is left even slightly damp against the skin is where odor and hot spots begin, and on a large dog the volume of coat makes that far easier to get wrong. Doing one dog at a time is what makes the time available.
The Big Breeds Around Healdsburg
The large dogs on this route come with very different coats, and each wants a different plan.
- Golden retrievers and shepherd mixes: heavy shedders here, best served by regular de-shedding and tidy feathering rather than clipping
- Huskies and other northern breeds: dense double coats that get de-shedded, never shaved
- Standard poodles and large doodles: continuously growing coats that need a real haircut rhythm
- Short coated giants: less brushing, but they still want proper bathing, drying and nails
Coat type sets the schedule far more than the number on the scale does.
Nails and Ears Matter More at This Size
Long nails change how any dog stands, and the bigger the dog the more weight rides on that changed posture. On a large breed already prone to hip and joint trouble, keeping nails at a sensible length is genuine maintenance rather than tidiness.
Ears get checked at every visit too. Big drop-eared breeds hold moisture after a swim in the Russian River or a pond, and that is worth catching early rather than late.
Heat and the Shave Question
Healdsburg summers are hot, and owners of big double coated dogs are the ones most often tempted to shave. A double coat blocks sun and lets air move, so taking the guard coat off usually leaves the dog hotter and exposed, and the coat frequently grows back a different texture.
The better answer for a large double coat is a bath, a complete dry and a serious de-shed that removes the packed undercoat trapping the heat. Alexis will walk you through what she is seeing in your dog's coat before anything is decided.
Keeping a Big Coat Manageable at Home
The gap between appointments is where a large coat is won or lost, and the honest problem is scale. Brushing a big dog properly takes real time, so most owners do a pass over the top and stop, which leaves the coat next to the skin untouched.
Working in sections helps more than working faster. One area at a time, down to the skin, over several short sessions across a week beats one heroic attempt that neither of you enjoys. Concentrate on the places that pack first on a big dog: behind the ears, under the collar, the armpits, the trousers on the back legs and the tail feathering. Those are the spots that turn into a matting problem while the back and sides still look perfectly fine.

Booking a Large Dog Groom
Tell Alexis your dog's breed, rough weight and how the coat is doing when you request an appointment, and ask her about anything specific to your dog's size or mobility so she can confirm what she can accommodate before you book. If your dog struggles with lifting or with standing for long, say so then.
Appointments run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM across Healdsburg, Windsor, Geyserville and Santa Rosa.
