Gentle Care
Senior Dog Grooming
Certified geriatric grooming: a slower pace, extra support, and comfort-first handling for the gray muzzles. Grooming at home takes the hardest part out of the day.

Grooming Built Around an Older Dog
Senior dogs do not need a faster appointment, they need a different one. Alexis is a certified geriatric dog groomer, and a senior session is planned around what your dog's body is comfortable doing rather than around a fixed routine.
The hardest parts of a traditional grooming day for an older dog happen before anyone touches the coat: being lifted into a car, riding across town, waiting in a kennel, then waiting again for pickup. Grooming at your door removes every one of them. Your dog walks a few steps out, is groomed one on one, and walks straight back inside.
What Changes in a Senior Session
The differences are practical rather than cosmetic.
- Breaks whenever the dog needs them, not when a schedule says so
- Positions changed often, so nothing is held long on sore joints
- Quieter handling and drying for dogs whose hearing or sight has faded
- Gentler products for skin that has thinned with age
- Sore spots, lumps and stiff areas left alone once you flag them
- A comfort-first finish rather than a show-perfect one
Tell Alexis what your vet has said and what your dog struggles with when you book. Knowing in advance is what makes the plan possible.
Coats Age Too
An older dog's coat is not the coat they had at three. Texture changes, density drops in some breeds and rises in others, and the skin underneath gets thinner and more easily irritated.
Senior double coated dogs still need the undercoat lifted out rather than shaved off, which is what a de-shedding treatment does. Senior doodles and poodles keep growing coat at any age, so they still need a haircut rhythm. Older silky coats mat more readily as grooming at home gets harder, which makes a regular bath and brush more valuable, not less.
Heat Is Harder on Older Dogs
Healdsburg summers are genuinely hot, and older dogs regulate temperature less efficiently than they used to. A packed, unbrushed coat holds warmth against the skin exactly when a senior can least afford it.
A clean, fully brushed out coat lets air move. It is also why grooming at home matters more in July than in January: the appointment itself never involves a hot car or a wait in a strange building. That applies across Healdsburg, Windsor, Geyserville and Santa Rosa alike.
Nails Are Often the Most Useful Thing
Long nails change how a dog stands, and on a body already managing sore joints that shift in posture matters. It shows up as clicking on hard floors, slipping on hardwood, or hesitation at the back steps.
Nail trims are part of every visit and available on their own. For a senior who is otherwise doing well, that alone can be the most useful appointment on the list.
Between Visits at Home
Most of what keeps an older dog comfortable happens between appointments, and it is smaller than people think. A few minutes of gentle brushing while your dog is already lying down beats a long session that asks them to stand. Working in short passes rather than one long one keeps it from becoming something they dread.
Pay attention to the places that mat first on an aging dog: behind the ears, under the collar, the armpits, and the trousers at the back legs. Those are the spots where a coat goes from fine to tight quickly, especially once a dog is lying down more than they used to. If you find something you cannot work through gently, leave it and tell Alexis rather than fighting it.

Booking a Senior Groom
Shorter visits more often are kinder to an older dog than occasional long ones, so the useful rhythm is usually more frequent than owners expect. Appointments run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM across the whole route.
Request an appointment with your dog's age, what they find difficult and anything your vet has flagged. If the coat has matted because brushing became uncomfortable, say so plainly: the options are wider than most owners fear, and they are covered on the matted coat page.
