Coat Recovery
Matted Coat Grooming
Coats mat. It happens to careful owners, to rescue dogs, to any dog who got wet and dried badly. Alexis will look at it, tell you the kindest option, and get your dog comfortable again.

An Honest Look at a Matted Coat
A mat is shed hair that never made it out of the coat. It tangles with growing hair, tightens, and pulls at the skin underneath. Left long enough it traps moisture against the skin, hides whatever is going on under there, and becomes genuinely painful.
Matted coat grooming is the straightforward version of this service. Alexis puts hands on the coat, tells you how deep it actually goes, and explains the real options rather than promising something a tight mat will not allow.
What Happens Depends on How Tight It Is
The honest answer comes from hands on the coat, because how deep a mat goes is not visible from the surface. What Alexis tells you falls into a few situations:
- A light mat can often be worked out with the right tools and enough time, and the length stays
- A tighter mat may mean shortening the affected area rather than the whole dog
- A coat matted close to the skin throughout usually means clipping short, because dragging a comb through it is painful and unsafe
- Skin that is red, sore or hiding something underneath is a veterinary matter, and she will say so plainly
A short coat grows back. Skin that has been pulled at for weeks takes longer to recover, which is why the kind answer and the fast answer are usually the same one.
Why It Happens Here
Healdsburg gives a coat two different ways to mat. The wet season brings mud, and a damp coat that dries packed down mats from the inside out, which is why a filthy December often becomes a matted February.
Summer works the other way. Dogs who swim the Russian River or the ponds, or run dry grass and trail dirt, come home with silt, dust and seed debris worked deep into the coat. Air drying with all of that still in there does the rest. Foxtails add their own problem, because a mat can hide one that is already working into skin.
Brushing the Top Is the Common Trap
Almost every owner with a matted dog was brushing. The brush glided over the surface, the coat looked handled, and the mat was forming underneath against the skin where the bristles never reached.
That is why a real brush out works right down to the skin, and why a bath and brush between haircuts is the practical prevention. Curly and wavy coats need it most, because the hair they shed stays caught in the curl instead of dropping out. Doodle owners see this first when the adult coat comes in, which is covered on the puppy page.
No Lectures
Owners put off calling because they expect to be told off. Coats mat for entirely ordinary reasons: a busy few months, a rescue dog who arrived that way, an older dog who finds brushing uncomfortable, a puppy whose coat changed faster than anyone expected.
The job is getting the dog comfortable and giving you a plan that fits your actual life. Sometimes that is a shorter cut that is easy to maintain. Sometimes it is a regular rhythm that keeps a longer coat viable. Either way you will know where you stand.
Booking
Describe what you are seeing when you request an appointment: where the mats are, roughly how long it has been, and whether your dog minds being touched there. That lets Alexis plan enough time rather than discovering the scale of it in your driveway.
Appointments run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM, across Healdsburg, Windsor, Geyserville and Santa Rosa.
